Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar, let sit 5 minutes)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot coffee (or hot water for a milder flavor)

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (50g) cocoa powder
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (120ml) heavy cream or milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch (23cm) round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together oil, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Slowly pour in the hot coffee while stirring. The batter will be thin—that’s perfect!

Step 2: Bake the Cake
