Author:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter
    • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
    • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
    • Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth. The batter should be slightly thicker than pancake batter.
  2. Heat the Oil
    • Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot.
    • Heat to 350°F (175°C)—test with a drop of batter; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
  3. Fry the Swirls
    • Pour the batter into a piping bag, squeeze bottle, or use a funnel with your finger covering the tip.
    • Drizzle the batter in a circular, swirling motion into the hot oil.
    • Fry for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
    • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel.
  4. Dust & Serve
    • Generously sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
    • Serve warm with chocolate sauce, fruit, or cinnamon sugar if desired!
