Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (optional, for extra smooth texture)

For Decoration:

  • Chocolate shavings or curls
  • Cocoa powder dusting
  • Chocolate chips or sprinkles

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour in hot coffee (or water), stirring until the batter is smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing until light and fluffy.
  3. Stir in vanilla extract. If needed, add heavy cream for a softer, silkier frosting.

Step 3: Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting evenly over the top.
  2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  3. Smooth the frosting with a spatula and decorate with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or chocolate chips.

Step 4: Chill & Serve

  • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the frosting to set.
