Materials:
- Wax flakes (soy, beeswax, or paraffin)
- Wicks (appropriate size for your container)
- Containers (heat-safe glass jars, teacups, etc.)
- Wick stickers or glue
- Fragrance oils or essential oils (optional)
- Double boiler or heat-safe bowl and pot
- Thermometer
- Stirring utensil
- Pencils or chopsticks (to secure wicks)
Instructions:
- Prepare your containers: Clean and dry your containers thoroughly. If using wick stickers, center the wick on the bottom of the container. If using glue, apply a small amount of glue to the wick base and hold it in place until it sets.
- Melt the wax: Fill the bottom of your double boiler or pot with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the wax flakes in the top container or bowl and let them melt completely, stirring occasionally.
- Add fragrance (optional): Once the wax is melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. Add your fragrance oil or essential oil according to the manufacturer’s instructions (usually a few drops per pound of wax). Stir gently to combine.
- Secure the wicks: If you haven’t already, center the wicks in the containers and secure them with wick stickers or glue. Use pencils or chopsticks placed across the top of the container to keep the wicks upright while the wax cools.
- Pour the wax: Carefully pour the melted wax into the containers, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
- Cool and cure: Allow the candles to cool and harden completely. This may take several hours, depending on the size of the candles. Once they’re solid, trim the wicks to about ΒΌ inch.
- Enjoy! Light your candles and enjoy the ambiance and fragrance.
Tips and Variations:
- Experiment with different waxes: Each type of wax has its own properties and burn time.
- Use different containers: Get creative with your containers! You can use mason jars, teacups, or even old tins.
- Add color: You can add candle dye to the melted wax to create colored candles.
- Layer scents: Try layering different fragrance oils or essential oils for a unique scent blend.
- Add dried flowers or herbs: For a decorative touch, add dried flowers or herbs to the top of the candle before it cools completely.
Safety Precautions:
- Always melt wax in a double boiler or heat-safe container to avoid fire hazards.
- Never leave melting wax unattended.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials.
- Trim wicks before each use to prevent large flames.
Have fun making your own candles!
